Research Institute for Water and Waste Water Technology - Versuchs-
und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin

In the Research Institute for Water and Waste Water Technology (FIWAT) at the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Braurei in Berlin (VLB) the analytics of drinking waters, mineral waters and wastewaters are an essential component of the actual research projects in the area of water recycling as well as cleaning and disinfection. These research fields are developed from the decades of experience of the VLB as a notified test instance on drinking water. A laboratory with standard analytics is available for the scientific work on the basis of different metrical methods. Other available technical infrastructures are modern spectroscopic and chromatographic systems and different detection systems.

For more information visit:

Role in WATER project: VLB-FIWAT will support CNR with its competence about analytics of drinking waters, waste water and water management. It will provide specific analyses upon on request and it will assist the study of Aci Castello case.

Municipality of Aci Castello

Aci Castello is a city and municipality in the Catania's district of eastern, Italy. The city is located next to Catania on the Mediterranean coast and accounts about 19,000 inhabitants. The primary economic sectors are tourism and fishing. The city is developed around a castle, which was built in 1076 by the Normans. In 1169, Aci Castello started to grow after an eruption of Mount Etna made the towns around it uninhabitable. The city includes also the near archipelago of the Cyclops Islands.

For more information visit:

Role in WATER project: The municipality of Aci Castello will contribute to the development of an innovation culture in the territory where will the WATER action operate. The research results will be applied to the Aci Castello sea water. In addition, the city hall, the wonderful castle and square of Aci Castello will be the perfect locations for many meetings, workshops, conference and festival organized within the WATER action. The municipality will support CNR for the organization of these events.

Marine Protected Area of the Cyclops Islands

The Marine Protected Area (AMP) of the Cyclops Islands extends in a sea area in front of the city of Aci Castello. It is holding a series of geological, flora and fauna of great importance due to scientific studies, mostly natural character, conducted primarily by the University of Catania since '800, which allow easy evaluation of temporal variations in the composition of ecosystems. This institution, depending on the Italian Ministry of Environment and Sea, is responsible of annual monitoring of environmental and socio-economic conditions in the Area. This has allowed the allocation of economic resources for the implementation of appropriate programs of research in the biophysical and socio-economic sectors.

For more information visit:

Role in WATER project: AMP will provide to CNR the needs and requirements in the field of environmental issues, in particular regarding water purification, with the main aim of improving the quality of the sea water in Aci Castello. It will also support CNR for the quantification of organisms, such as algae.
